• Keeping doors and windows closed can help keep heat in your classrooms – meaning heating systems work more efficiently to reach and maintain the right temperature – saving energy!

• PC monitors use around 65% of a computer’s energy and cost around £30 per screen each year
• One old light bulb can create 2 tons of CO2 each year – yet daylight is free and produces zero CO2 emissions
• Screens and devices left on standby mode generates 1% of the global CO2 emissions (for example, air travel = 3%)
• 6.5million people in UK admit to leaving lights on when they aren’t in the room (that’s 37,440 tons of CO2 per day/£800+ per person each year)

• Almost 50% of all energy costs are spent on heating and hot water
• Reducing heating by 1oC can save up to 8% on heating energy – recommended classroom temperature is 18oC
• Smart heating/thermostats and modern, efficient appliances can reduce the amount of energy needed and only use energy in places where it is most needed
• Boilers work more efficiently when they aren’t heating unused rooms (require less time to reach the target temperature)

The UK Government has already set out its strategy to become ‘Net Zero’ by 2050 – and we all need to play our part to achieve this.

Captain Carbon is our schools’ first line of defence, battling against wasted energy and launching his mission to raise awareness of and encourage more sustainable behaviours. Reducing the amount of energy, we use will have the biggest immediate impact.

Launching at the same time as the UN Climate Change Conference (COP27) – Captain Carbon will burst into action in different places throughout our schools. Staff and students will be asked to work together to create their own Captain Carbon Action Plan, before bringing this plan to life.
