Key Stage 3

The current Year 7 study Spanish while Year 8 study French. In Year 8 there is one Spanish option class and in Year 7 there is a French option group running this year. In future years, we plan to teach Spanish for all students at Key Stage 3 with French running as an option for the keenest young linguists to challenge themselves with. All of our feeder primary schools are aware of our move towards Spanish. The Key Stage 3 curriculum covers a range of reading, writing and speaking and listening assessments throughout the year that focus on key skills. Pupils will develop their strengths in these identified key areas and focused sets of skills each term.

Assessment

All assessments are completed in class under controlled conditions in order to build up vital skills required for success at GCSE level. Pupils are made aware of what they are being assessed on, and how, early on in the unit. These assessments are based four Assessment Objectives (AOs). The Assessment Objectives have been devised from the new GCSE specifications, a copy of which can be found at the front of your child’s exercise book.

Key Stage 4

At Key Stage 4, Spanish and French are both examined and assessed by AQA. Across the Key Stage, key language is delivered through 12 units of study devised by the examination board. We also use popular music and film from Spanish and French speaking territories in support of our work to give the students who opt for Spanish or French a broad cultural experience as well as an immersion in aspects of their chosen language.
