The Inspector attended the College to complete an informal review of the improvements that have been made to ensure that it is now operating as a ‘Good’ school ahead of any Ofsted inspections.

The Inspector was delighted with the progress that the College has made and praised many elements including high quality marking, the feedback teachers give to students to help them to improve, behaviour standards and the College’s sixth form success.

Headteacher of Abbey College, Andy Christoforou, said: “I am delighted with the findings of the report. This is another important step in our journey to provide the excellent education that the Ramsey community deserves. I would like to thank our staff, students, parents and the wider Ramsey community for all their support and I look to our future with much excitement and pride in all that we have achieved so far.”

The Inspector was particularly impressed with the high quality of marking and feedback that he found at the College, especially in English lessons. He felt that Year 11 students were being sufficiently challenged, with work tailored to give pupils a choice of activities at different levels, and that overall, pupils displayed an excellent attitude to learning.

In his report, he also praised the performance of the College’s sixth form whose results last year placed them in the top 4 per cent nationally for progress. The Inspector also predicted sixth form results to remain high again this year.

The Inspector met with a small group of Year 11 student leaders and said the students were very positive about the school. One student was quoted in the inspector’s report as saying: “Teachers tell us not just what to improve, but how.” Students also felt that behaviour standards had risen dramatically while they have been at the College and said they felt “bullying, racism and homophobia are virtually unknown”.

The Inspector finally praised the partnership the College have built so far with Thomas Deacon Education Trust (TDET). A partnership the College say they hope to develop further. The Inspector particularly commended the Trust’s work with the College so far and the quality of the reviews and feedback the Trust has given to the College. The close proximity of the Trust’s schools make for a close working partnership and for real and meaningful collaboration between its schools, teachers, and students.
