The transition into secondary education can be a daunting period for many young people and traditional transition days can achieve only a limited amount. This can often mean that when pupils join their secondary schools in September they spend a period of time settling in and adapting to their new school rather than progressing with their learning and personal development.

Led by Abbey College, the new partnership with local primary schools aims to change this by launching two pathways for this year’s transition from primary school to secondary school.

As in previous years, there will be a comprehensive transition programme for all pupils and parents with a variety of events throughout the spring and summer terms, including coffee mornings, informal meetings and transition days at the College on the 4 and 5 July.

However this year the schools will also be launching an innovative new transition programme for Year 6 pupils in Ramsey for a three week period from Monday 19 June, culminating in a town-wide graduation ceremony at Abbey College on Thursday 6 July.

As part of this new pathway a small group of primary school pupils will attend Abbey College for three weeks and will become immersed in the Abbey College way of life, experience secondary school education and get to know some of their peers and teachers before the summer break.

The students remaining at their current schools will also receive regular visits from Abbey College members of staff and take part in whole town events at the College during this time. All students involved, whether at Abbey College or at their primary school, will benefit by being in smaller teaching groups that will support their progress.

Andy Christoforou, Headteacher at Abbey College, said: “We are delighted to be launching this new method of transition for our Year 6 pupils. We believe this will really help both pupils and their parents to get to know their key points of contact more efficiently and will also help to answer any questions pupils or parents might have about the move into secondary school.

“We hope parents are as excited about this innovative new partnership as we are and we look forward to welcoming them into Abbey College over the coming weeks to explain more about the plans.”

The College will be visiting local primary schools over the next few weeks to share more details with parents and carers.
